October 2025 Safe Campus Update

October 23, 2025

First things first

Fall semester’s in full swing, and the events calendar is stacked! Whether it’s game day, a guest speaker, or a performance, know that the University has safety resources to support you.

Darker days ahead

Not to be dramatic, but daylight saving time is coming. Before November 2, when the clock falls back, here are a few things you should know:

  • If you’re on campus and notice a broken streetlight, call Facilities Management at 612-624-2900 with the location and ID number on the pole. Check out Safe Campus for info on reporting outages off campus.
  • Travel in groups on well-lit paths whenever possible. 624-WALK and Rave Guardian are available 24/7 to help you safely reach your destination.
  • Dinkytown is a bit brighter thanks to new city lampposts. Continue to light up the night by keeping a porch light on if you live in a house.

Protect your peace

It can be hard to keep up with work, school, and life to-dos, then mix in that pesky FOMO and comparison game, and hello burnout.

Know this: When life gets tough, acknowledge your feelings and respond with self-compassion and care. Resources from Boynton Mental Health & Counseling can be a helpful tool in taking small steps to be kinder to your mind.

Reminder: It’s okay to take a break. For real. Setting boundaries to practice better time-management and wellbeing habits in place of doing everything will help you to go full send on what matters most.

Safety roundup: All around the (safety) world

  • Save a life: Join Boynton Health, the Steve Rummler Hope Network, and UMNPrepared for free naloxone training on October 28, from 4:00–5:00 p.m.
  • New message: October is cybersecurity month. Consider this your reminder to practice safe computing.
  • Best prevention: Schedule your flu and COVID-19 vaccines at a Campus Vaccine Clinic on October 28-30 in the Great Hall of Coffman Memorial Union; at the St. Paul Student Center on November 6; or at the Humphrey School of Public Affairs on November 11.
  • On track: Avoid a pileup and use bike lanes and pedestrian walkways for their designated purpose.
  • Landlord chic: Join Off Campus Living and Student Legal Service for Renter Education Workshops each month for essential information you should know before living off campus.
