October Safe Campus Update

October 17, 2024

☝️ First things first

As you get comfy in your favorite study spot, don’t forget to keep an eye on your stuff. A quick bathroom break, snack run, or chit-chat are opportunities for someone to swipe your things.

Pro tip: Record serial numbers, usually found in settings or the underside of items, in case your computer, phone, or tablet gets lost or stolen.

🦠 Don’t scoff at this cough

Cases of pertussis (a.k.a. whooping cough) in Minnesota have been on an uptick. This nasty bug starts out feeling like a mild cold but quickly turns into a cough that won’t quit.

The good news: Vaccines are here to save the day! The pertussis vaccine is super effective, and doctors say you should get a booster every ten years. Can’t remember the last time you got yours? Boynton Health’s got your back and can help you figure it out.

💜 Love with consent and respect

Most college sexual assaults happen during the first few months of fall when campus energy is high and everyone’s getting back into the groove. You can help build a culture of consent and healthy relationships by getting involved with The Aurora Center:

  • Report incidents of sexual assault, violence, and harassment, and understand survivor/victim rights and confidential support resources.
  • Request prevention education workshops and explore volunteer opportunities.

Stop by Say BOO to Domestic Violence on October 30 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Coffman Memorial Union outside of Great Hall for Halloween-themed activities about healthy relationships and supporting survivors.

🏈 Safety roundup: Fall into Homecoming

Homecoming week is October 21-26. Stay up to date on all event updates online or on social media.

  • Stash your stuff: When in a crowd, stash your phone and wallet in a secure pocket or purse when you’re not using them.
  • Keep your solo: Never accept open drinks and don’t leave your drink unattended.
  • Hold firm: Don’t let others tailgate into a residence hall or U Card-only building behind you.
  • Rat pack: Travel with others whenever possible and use resources like Gopher Chauffeur or 624-WALK to get home safely.
  • At the hip: Stay with your guests at all times and don’t lend them your U Card to access buildings.
