Sunrise Plan: Summer Camps, Events, and Activities

Return to Safe Campus Public Health Alert
View the Sunrise Plan

University daytime summer camps, activities, events and recreation centers can apply to resume operations in light of the guidance provided by Governor Tim Walz and the Minnesota Department of Health. All applications must be in compliance with applicable safety and health provisions and must receive University approval. This page offers specific information on how to submit proposals for programs, which will vary from the guidance provided in the Sunrise Plan for University faculty and staff. Continue to check this page for updates if state guidance evolves.

Summer programming and activities

Summer programming and activities may resume for day camps and activities, subject to a University approval process and compliance with MDH's Guidance for Social Distancing in Youth and Student Programs, Guidance for Social Distancing in Youth Sports as applicable, and COVID-19 Exclusion Guidance: Decision Tree for Symptomatic Individuals in Schools and Childcare Programs

Approval process
Send requests to your campus, college, or unit’s senior leader and include a summary operational plan outlining how the program will comply with the MDH provisions, as well as a statement by the program leader that they have read the above linked material and understand the expectations.

Senior leaders should route requests and all supporting material and plans for University approval to Julie Sweitzer, sweitzer@umn.edu, the director for the College Readiness Consortium, who manages Youth Central. Programs must not commence before receiving explicit approval from the University. Once approval is provided, camp updates for the public may be found at Youth Central.

 Events and recreation centers

Events
To reopen an event venue, you must follow the Stay Safe MN instructions. Please review all requirements and develop  a COVID-19 Preparedness Plan. Most University facilities that host events will fall into the "Entertainment" category. The plan you develop should be a general one, designed to cover the operation of your venue rather than any specific event.

Gyms, studios, and fitness centers
To reopen a gym, studio, or fitness center on campus, you must follow the Stay Safe MN instructions. Please review all requirements and develop a COVID-19 Preparedness Plan.  The plan you develop should be a general one, designed to cover the operation of your venue.

Approval process
When your plan is complete for either category above, please review it locally with your supervisor and then your Chancellor or Vice Chancellor/Dean/RRC leader. Once your plan is approved at that level, send it to both University Health and Safety (romin020@umn.edu) and the University Services VP office (userv@umn.edu). The plan will be reviewed for compliance and consistency across the University.

You will be informed if your facility can reopen under your proposed plan, or if additional changes are needed. If state guidance significantly changes, you may be asked to modify your plan.
