Safety in every sense: Physical safety
June 10, 2025
You’ve probably seen emails and websites referencing “safety in all sense of the word.” What does that mean? At the U, we take a comprehensive approach to safety, knowing it takes more than one thing to feel safe.
This week’s topic will cover physical safety.
What does that mean?
Physical safety means creating a secure environment free from the fear of violence, accidents, or other forms of physical harm. On or around campus, there are prevention measures to take that keep you protected and less vulnerable to threats.
What does that look like?
As an individual, physical safety can look like
- Being fully aware of your surroundings by observing the people or places around you, checking for traffic before moving, and avoiding distractions such as using your phone.
- Using safety tools like pepper spray, a personal alarm, or safety apps like Rave Guardian for protection and prevention
- Making positive choices if or when choosing to participate in activities that increase your risk of harm, like consuming drugs or alcohol. Set personal limits, socialize in safe places, and always have a plan for getting safely home.
On a larger scale, physical safety can look like
- Creating and existing in a community where safe practices—from walking in groups to consent—are the norm.
- Implementation of safety regulations like occupancy limits or SAFE-U Alerts which not only helps you stay safe but also helps emergency personnel respond effectively to a crisis.
How can I do that?
- Build your skills- Take part in a self-defense class or online training, and visit the Off-Campus Safety Center to ask questions and build your safety toolkit. Use that knowledge not only to stay safe but also to model safe behaviors in our community.
- Reach out for help - Whatever the situation, there are people equipped to help in your time of need. In all emergencies, call 911.
- UMPD - Call 612-624-2677 for non-emergencies
- Student Crisis Line - Call 612-301-4673
- Aurora Center 24-hour helpline - Call 612-626-9111
- Take advantage of campus resources - The University works to support safety in the broadest sense through many tools, services, and partnerships. You can find resources across transportation, personal wellbeing, and more on Safe Campus.
