September 2026 Safe Campus Update
September 17, 2026
First things first
Welcome to the 2026-2027 school year at the University of Minnesota! On our campus, we approach safety broadly so everyone can feel welcomed and supported. Read the Safe Campus Update each month for info, tools, and services to use anytime, anywhere.
No going solo with the Solo
A party here, a tailgate there. If choosing to participate in some Solo cup activities, keep these tips in mind to keep the vibes right.
- Know the signs of alcohol poisoning. Remember, it’s everyone’s responsibility to get immediate help when it’s needed and wait for help to arrive, without fear of punishment under Minnesota’s Medical Amnesty law.
- Never accept open drinks and don’t leave your drink unattended.
- Don't leave by yourself. If you happen to leave with a different group of people, let your friends know who you’re going with and where you’ll be.
FYI: Don’t feel pressured to drink if you don’t want to! Enjoy other activities at the event or check out the Events Calendar and GopherLink for some sober fun.

On your line, all the time
The University keeps you in the know about emergencies or changes to campus operations with SAFE-U Alerts. You’ll always receive alerts by email, but you can also add text and phone notifications for all-around knowledge. Just:
Log in to MyU→ Select My Info→ Select Manage SAFE-U Alerts→Select My Profile.
You can also opt in to receive Dinkytown Alerts to be notified if something unsafe happens in that area. Follow the same MyU steps but select “My Information” instead.
Know this: The University of Minnesota Police Department patrols campus and surrounding neighborhoods, working closely with city police and community groups to keep our community safe.
