April Safe Campus Update

April 9, 2024

☝️First things first

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and it’s up to all of us to prevent sexual abuse, assault, and harassment. By creating a strong, affirmative consent culture and advocating for survivors, we can build a campus where everyone feels safe, respected, and supported.

Let's commit to taking actions that promote accountability and prevention.

There are numerous reporting options for incidents of assault, violence, and harassment, with advocates from the Aurora Center available to support you throughout the reporting process.

🌬️Keep your eye on the sky

Severe Weather Awareness Week blows through Minnesota April 8-12, and it’s time to batten down the hatches. When extreme weather hits, it’s best to leave storm chasing to the pros and follow these tips instead.

  • Incoming message, listen up!: When it comes to severe weather, you’ve got to stay ready. Keep your eyes peeled for watches and warnings issued by the National Weather Service and SAFE-U weather alerts.
  • Game plan on lock: Dust off the emergency plans and procedures in your home, classroom, or workplace, because when the going gets tough, the prepared get going.
  • Split to shelter: When the weather gets wild, hightail it to the nearest shelter (preferably a basement or windowless room) and wait for the storm to pass.

Heads up! We've got not one, but two statewide tornado drills on Thursday, April 11 at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. When you hear the sirens, remember it’s just a dress rehearsal and a chance to brush up on your tornado-dodging skills.

👋Safety roundup: Lend a hand, and your heart

April 21-27 is National Volunteer Week. In a world where connection is more vital than ever, volunteering isn't just about lending a helping hand—it's about building bridges, forging bonds, and creating a sense of belonging that fosters a safe and welcoming campus.

  • Lead the way: Join committees through Undergraduate Student Government and Boynton Health to advocate for improved health, safety, and wellbeing.
  • Community cares: Want to take your volunteering game off-campus? Participate in U of M Day of Service or connect with the Center for Community-Engaged Learning to unlock a treasure trove of volunteer programs across the Twin Cities.
  • Better together: Calling all LGBTQIA+ trailblazers! Spend time with the Sexuality Center’s Mentor Program. Not only will you support your peers, but you'll also help create a campus where everyone feels like they belong.
  • Gopher pride: Show love for the maroon and gold by becoming a UMN Advocate to support the University at the State Capitol and champion its awesomeness.
