Six Tips For a Safer Spring Jam™

April 16, 2024

Live music, carnival rides, and food, oh my! Spring Jam™ is back and Student Unions & Activities is bringing the fun and games to campus on April 20. As the big day approaches, keep these six tips in mind to help ensure you savor the jam instead of being caught in it.

1. Plan Ahead

It’s cool to be prepared.

2. Stick Together

Visiting a food truck? Need a bathroom break? Getting ready to leave? Make sure all friends are accounted for before moving on.

3. Stay Fueled Up

With all the excitement, it's easy to forget to eat or drink enough water. To avoid injury or becoming hangry, eat and drink something before the event as well as while you’re there. There will be multiple food vendors and drink stations, including free TapMpls water stations (make sure to bring a clear, refillable water bottle!)

Those 21+ have the option to visit the beer garden. If you choose to drink, know your limits and stay within them. If you see someone who appears to be in distress, offer help or notify event staff immediately.

4. Be Aware Of Your Surroundings

Be mindful of the people around you, the location of first aid tents and exits, and any potential hazards. Knowing where to go and what to do can make all the difference in an emergency.

5. Keep Your Valuables Safe

Prevent theft by keeping items close to your body and secure. If you stumble across a rogue U Card or keychain, return it to event staff. All lost U Cards will be brought to the U Card Office following the event.

6. Travel Safely

Plan a safe ride to and from Spring Jam™. You can find University travel resources on Safe Campus.

  • If walking, always travel in a group, especially at night.
  • If driving, be mindful of pedestrians at crosswalks and never drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
  • If using rideshare, double-check the driver’s license plate and ask “What’s my name” before entering the vehicle.
  • If riding the bus, make sure to map your route using GopherTrip.
  • If biking or scootering, lock it up (with a U-Lock) on an appropriate bike rack—not to handrails, trees, or fences.
