Stepping Out For Summer Safety

May 16, 2024

The warmth of the summer season brings a call to gophers to emerge from the tunnels and winter shelters. Whether you’re stepping lightly or making a mad dash across campus and beyond, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Before you leave…

  • Don’t let showers rain on your parade. Plan accordingly and keep an eye out for severe weather warnings.
  • Tell a roommate or friend where you’ll be and when you plan to be home.
  • Secure your phone and wallet in a purse, bag, or zipper pocket.
  • Lock your residence door behind you.

While out and about…

  • Travel with friends whenever possible.
  • Avoid distracted walking by removing headphones and putting your phone away.
  • Be cautious of strangers asking to use your phone. Dial yourself or direct them to an open business for help.
  • Remember to lock your vehicle doors and tuck away any valuables.

When heading home…

  • Leave with who you came with.
  • Travel through well-lit and well-traveled paths.
  • Wait for rides in well-lit areas in sight of other people or building cameras.
  • Turn on your porch light once safely inside to help others have a well-lit trip home.
