The Big 3 on Free Expression at the U

September 10, 2024

This school year is sure to bring new friendships, intellectual growth, and passionate debates about important issues. Thanks to the First Amendment, academic freedom, and shared passion for learning, college campuses, including the University of Minnesota, are ripe for civic engagement. Whether you put the “free” in free speech or just asked Google, “Explain civic engagement,” here are three things to know.

1. You have the right to freely and lawfully express your beliefs.

Whether in class, at home hanging with friends, or participating in a student group you have a right to be honest and speak your truth. After all, that’s what higher education is about, freely debating ideas, topics, and beliefs. Sometimes these discussions can challenge your worldview, but they may also spawn new ways of thinking and deepen your commitment to causes you care about.

2. Hate speech, racism, and prejudice have no place at our University.

Words and behaviors can cause physical and psychological harm. Attacking or demeaning others based on their race, religion, gender, or other parts of who they are is not OK and won’t be tolerated here.

3. Everyone has the right to physical and mental safety.

You belong at the University of Minnesota and we are committed to creating an environment where you are safe and supported in making the most out of college life. Whether going to class, cheering on the Gophers at an athletics event, hanging out with friends, or expressing yourself at a rally—you belong here.
