Springtime Safety Tips
April 15, 2025
Spring is here, and warmer weather is approaching. As we reach the end of the spring semester, our campus becomes vibrant with outdoor activities, but it’s essential to prioritize safety with springtime fun. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind.
Stay aware of your surroundings
With the increase in outdoor events—and snowless sidewalks to stroll—distractions can easily occur. Tuck away your phone and headphones to be vigilant, especially at night. Always travel on established streets and sidewalks.
Stay together
When heading out, consider going in a group. Whether out to dinner or a study sesh, there’s safety in numbers. Arrange to leave with whom you came with, making sure no one gets left behind. If you must travel alone, always share your location with someone you trust.
Use your resources
It’s always smart to familiarize yourself with campus safety resources. Make use of
- 624-WALK for a trip across campus with a member of University Security.
- Gopher Chauffeur for a safe ride home.
- SAFE-U Alerts (and Dinkytown Alerts) for notifications about potential or active emergencies on and around campus.
- Blue light kiosks for immediate 911 connection and video surveillance.
Keep up with your belongings
Make sure your valuables are tucked away in a purse or pocket when not in use. If you have a car, always lock your doors and roll up all windows when exiting. Bring those valuable items with you if you can, or leave them out of sight. Set up digital safety features like Find My Device or attachable trackers in the event they get lost or stolen.
If you come across a lost item, return it to a building’s lost and found or the Department of Public Safety.
