Taking Precautions with Extreme Heat

July 21, 2023

Each summer, we can expect Minnesota experience a heatwave. High temperatures and sunny skies may look inviting, and if you’re making plans to soak up the sun, or admire it from your window, it’s important to be aware of the dangers with increasing temperatures. Read on for ways to manage extreme summer heat.

Ways to stay safe outdoors

  • Check the heat index (how hot it actually feels) to evaluate if your need to go outdoors can wait.
  • Take frequent breaks in cool, shaded places, preferably air-conditioned buildings.
  • Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty.
  • Use sunscreen on your face and body to prevent sunburn. Apply it every two hours for maximum protection.
  • Know the signs of heat exhaustion to prevent heatstroke.

Tips to keep cool indoors

  • Keep windows and doors closed.
  • Utilize air conditioning, fans, cold showers, and ice packs to keep cool.
  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
  • Limit strenuous activity to prevent exhaustion.
  • Make sure your pets have fresh, cool water too!

Did you know?

Electric fans may provide temporary comfort, but when the temperature is in the high 90s and above, blowing air onto your body that is higher than your body temperature can actually increase heat stress. Use ceiling fans to help circulate air or take a cool shower or bath to cool off.
